Any match between these two cricket superpowers is one of the most intense sporting rivalries anywhere in the world. Like Brazil against Argentina in Football, both countries have produced some of the finest players to grace the game.

On Wednesday March 30th, Mohali will host one of the Worlds greatest sporting contests. This match inspires so much passion amongst the players and supporters in the ground. Both Nations come to a virtual standstill when the two sides meet. The Rivalry has its origins deeper than sport.

The roots of this rivalry are rooted in politics, partition and continuing hostility. It is a sad loss to the sport that these two great Cricket nations are not able to play each other more often and that it is considered too dangerous for India to tour in Pakistan.

There will be a global TV audience of hundreds of millions on both sides of the divide. The match is set to feature anticipated personal duel between Sachin Tendulkar and Shahid Afridi.

Some say that a cricket contest between India and Pakistan is a proxy war, although that is slightly distasteful there is an element of truth. Heroes and villains can emerge from these matches. Emotions run high, tears are shed.

India and Pakistan have played many unforgettable matches against each other. The 1996 World cup quarter final saw Navjot Sidhu score 93 to lead India to a commanding 287 in their first innings. Anil Kumble then did the damage with the ball to bowl Pakistan out for 248.

India has enjoyed a better record over their closest neighbours and rivals, but Pakistan has also notched up notable success.

Like most great sporting rivalries around the World this match is about so much more than sport. National pride and identity are at stake, but amidst all the passion it is important to step back and realise that it is still only a game. Life does not depend on it.

If you’re one of the lucky few who has a ticket enjoy the passion and excellence first hand. If like the rest of sit back in front of the TV and get ready for a great spectacle of a first class sporting contest.
