If you live near to the sea, love the outdoors and can swim then surfing is a sport you’ll be able to enjoy for years. Don’t be put off by the belief that you have to spend lots of money on it.
It’s a fairly low maintenance activity once you’ve got your board, but this is the one essential item you need to get started. How do you choose your first board from all the shapes and sizes on the market?
You don’t need to buy anything too expensive. Chances are as a beginner you and your board will take a few knocks, so you don’t want to risk having your brand new top of the range board split in two on your first time in the water. Go for the cheaper end of the market and buy a practical board.
Don’t buy one of the cool looking boards that you’ve seen on surf movies or what the more experienced surfer dudes use. As a new surfer the way to get better is to catch waves.
Therefore you need to buy a board that is going to help you catch as many waves as easily as possible. Look for a board around 7ft long. As a general rule your first board should be about a foot longer than you are.
Wide thick boards will help you catch waves better and to balance yourself on the board. The board should be around 20 inches and 3 inches thick.
The shape of the board isn’t so important in choosing the board. In the early stages of learning to surf you need to be focussed on catching waves and managing to stand up. Turning and all the cool tricks will come with time and practice.
