Malibu beach, Bondi Beach, the Spanish costas. Oh no. The country which has honed beach culture down to a fine art form is Brazil. With most of Brazils near 200 million inhabitants living near to the coast, Brazilians have a lot of opportunities to enjoy the amazing beaches.

Life is played out on the beach in a country with some of the worst inequality in the world the beach is a great leveller. In the rush to own everything Beaches escaped this and remains the preserve of everybody. The beach is for leisure and commerce and is the playing field where the great Brazilian passions of Football, sex, Music and alcohol are played out.

Brazilians are by and large very friendly and gregarious people. These characteristics are accentuated on the beach where people lack of inhibitions are given free reign.

The stereotypes are mostly truisms when it comes to Brazilian beach culture. Women wear the skimpiest of bikinis known in Portuguese as fio dental (dental floss) and yes the men don’t feel embarrassed strutting around in the tightest of Speedos.

Games of football spring up organically along the beach, and anyone is welcome to get involved. Most Brazilians don’t speak much English, but not being a very cosmopolitan country people are very intrigued to meet foreigners (universally referred to as gringos) and will usually be very friendly.

Alcohol is the oil that keeps much of the fun rolling along and although most foreigners consider Caiprinha to be the national drink. Ice cold Beer is the drink of choice for most beach goers. Both drinks are sold along the beach by unlicensed vendors aiding the anarchic spirit of “o praia”.

If you don’t like the crowds and have access to a car then thousands of near deserted beaches really are your oyster.

Get away from it all by heading away from the cities to some of the most beautiful beaches Brazil has to offer. Bahia in the North East and Santa Catarina in the south are renowned for having the best beaches, but you don’t have to go far from the main population centres of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo , Salvador or Recife to find tropical paradise.
